William Grace Jr., born on June 12, 1947, passed away suddenly on August 5, 2025. A devoted husband, father & grandfather- he was the irreplaceable patriarch of his loving family.
William, known as “Skip” to many, was the beloved husband of AnneMarie Grace. Married for just shy of 54 years, they built a strong, beautiful family whose bonds remain a testament to their enduring partnership.
Skip is lovingly remembered by his children: Karen Garofalo (Joseph), Kathleen Egan (Richard) and William Grace III (Doreen), all of whom reside in Valley Stream, and by his sister, Maureen Grace, of Bohemia, NY.
His legacy continues through his cherished 8 grandchildren, who lovingly refer to him as “Poppy”: Kaitlin Garofalo, Joseph Garofalo, Joscelyn Egan, Kassidy Garofalo, Kalleigh Egan, Alexa Grace, Daragh Egan and Sydneigh Egan. They brought him great joy and each will carry forward a part of Poppy’s spirit in their own lives.
Skip was not only dedicated to his family, but also was a 60 year member of the Valley Stream Fire Department. He joined the Department in 1966 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in 1972 and Captain in 1973. In 1991, he was elected Chief of Department. Through the years that followed, he continued to be an integral member of the Department through his roles as Fire Council Warden, Safety Committee member, and his longtime position as Trustee to the VSFD Benevolent Association.
Also a dedicated employee, before his retirement he was a Heavy Equipment Operator with Local 138, working for Guy Pratt Construction for over 50 years. More recently he worked in the Engineering Department for the Village of Valley Stream.
Throughout his life, Skip remained a steady presence for those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and we will all miss him dearly.
