American Veteran 01

William Vito Facibene

February 29, 1928 ~ April 16, 2022 (age 94)

William Vito ("Bill") Facibene age 94, of Valley Stream, NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 16, 2022.

Bill was born at home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Nicholas and Lucille Facibene.  He received his education at Newtown High School in Elmhurst Queens.  At age 17, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy-Coast Guard, stationed in Curtis Bay, MD and Portsmouth, VA.  He served as a Quartermaster on the CGC Mistletoe, and CGC Wistaria.  Bill was honorably discharged in 1947 at Norfolk, VA, and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, and American Area Campaign Ribbon.

Mr. Facibene then began a lifelong career in banking as a teller for the Bushwick Savings Bank.  He met, and eventually married, Flavia

("Florence") Emma Ciampanti over an inter-bank transaction at the Corn Exchange Bank on Grand Avenue.  Bushwick was acquired by Anchor Savings Bank and Bill rose through the company while opening, troubleshooting, and managing branches in the 5 boroughs of NYC, and Long Island.

Bill was selected by Anchor Savings Bank for enrollment in The American Institute of Banking at Hofstra University, and graduated first in his class.

Known for his organizational and people skills, Mr. Facibene successfully led Anchor's expansion in the NY Metro area and was promoted to Assistant Vice President and Officer of the bank. Anchor was eventually absorbed by a succession of mergers into Chase Bank.

During this time Bill and Florence moved to Valley Stream and raised their three children.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and Manager of the St. Mary's Bees Little League Baseball Team in the Valley Stream Mail League. A former pitcher for the Midville Dodgers, Mr. Facibene enjoyed bowling and golf, and played the accordion.  After mourning the loss of the Brooklyn Dodgers to LA, Bill became a lifelong Mets fan, often attending games with his children and extended family.

Bill was always engaged in his community and played an integral role in fundraising as Journal Chairman for the Valley Stream Green Hornets Football Club, and the Valley Stream Central High School Father's and Booster's Club, the latter of which he became President of in 1980.

In his retirement, Bill enjoyed spending time with his 5 grandchildren.  He also served on the Board of the Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union (NEFCU), now Jovia.  Mr. Facibene was very involved in charity work for his parish church, Holy Name of Mary in Valley Stream where he was an usher and a Religious Education teacher. Bill worked tirelessly for the church Food Pantry delivering meals for the poor and sick.

He led the efforts of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul as President, and President of The Holy Name Society, a title he held at the time of his death.

Mr. Facibene is predeceased by his parents, and his sister Lucille.

He is survived by his spouse of 71 years, Florence Facibene, and their three children, Carol (Chris) Gallipoli of Commack, Janice (Chris) Sievers of Valley Stream, and Dr. William (Susan) Facibene of Roslyn, and five grandchildren (Zoë, Jordan, Kyle, Matthew, and Mariella).
