Thomas Bartsch, of Saint James, formerly of Valley Stream, passed away on Monday, May 30th, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81. Tom was a loving husband to his wife Blanche of 59 years. He also leaves behind his daughter Christine, Son-in-law John, grandchildren Nicholas (Lizzy), Toni-Ann (Christopher), John, great-granddaughter Emilia as well as daughter Karen (Joe), grandchildren Joseph, Travis and Nicole and great-granddaughter Giavonna. He is predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Doris and twin brother Eugene.
Tom honorably served in The U.S. Navy aboard the Franklin D. Roosevelt. He proudly served as a New York City Firefighter in Ladder 105, Brooklyn, New York. Since the age of 20, Tom has played an active role in the Valley Stream Fire Department, rising through the ranks to Chief in 1978. Continuing his life of service, Tom held the role of Chief Fire Inspector for the Village of Valley Stream for over 30 years. He will be remembered for his contagious smile, consistent leadership and unwavering loyalty to those he loved.
Tom enjoyed quality time with family, golfing with friends and visits to his second home in Cairo, NY. He was blessed with many friends but sadly leaves behind two of his best friends, Ronnie Mastrangelo and Ray Fayet. Tom was a man of intellect, integrity and loyalty and proudly led a life of service. He passionately embodied his favorite quote, "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life". He will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation, an organization for which Tom felt strongly.
