Sthanawati Datt (Gyan), 93, passed away peacefully on September 9 th , 2023 as
she was surrounded by the love, warmth, and care of her family. She was a life-
long Arya Samaj devotee. She is survived by her seven children, several grand
and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters and three brothers.
Gyan grew up in Skeldon, Guyana, where she and her husband (Narine Datt
1927-1977) established Liberty Hotel and Novelty Cinema. After the passing of
her husband in 1977, Gyan and several of her children maintained and operated
both businesses.
Some of her hobbies included traveling, watching Hindi movies, crocheting, and
line fishing at a pond near her house in Skeldon. One of her major traveling
adventures took her to India, where she made it a priority to visit her ancestral
home in Lucknow. Other trips included visiting her family in Holland, England,
Canada, and the United States.
In retirement, she resumed her crocheting talent. Several of her crocheted
doillies adorn the homes of her children and friends and will always be treasured.
Gyan frequently expressed to others, with a smile on her face and devotion in her
heart: “I’m happy. Thanks to the Lord.”
In her final moments, the words of the Gaytree Mantra were on her lips. She will
be missed.
