Robert J. Saunders, 80, of Valley Stream, New York, passed away on
March 2026 in Mineola, New York.
Born in 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in the San Juan Hill
neighborhood of New York City, which is now the site of Lincoln
Center, before moving to Hollis, Queens.
He met his wife, Nancy, while they were in high school. Their bond
grew into a lifelong partnership, and they married in 1965, going on
to share more than fifty years together until her passing in 2016.
Together they raised their two children and created a home centered on
love and stability. Robert built a life defined by quiet strength,
dedication, and deep commitment to family.
Robert proudly served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany
during the Vietnam War, where he worked in a clerical role. After
returning home, he began a long and steady career with Bell Telephone
and later as a member of IBEW Local 3, taking pride in his work and
his union affiliation.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy; his mother, Anne; and
his half-brother, John.
He is survived by his son, Robert, and Robert’s daughter Skye and her
mother Ronnie; his daughter, Dorothy, and her husband Noe; their
children Nancy and Nathan; Nathan’s wife Kaitlin, and their children
Matteo and Hadlee. He is also survived by his friend and companion,
Janet.
Robert will be remembered for his steady presence, his reliability,
and the quiet, enduring way he cared for those around him.
