On September 8, 2024, Richard D. Menzies III of Valley Stream passed away leaving a legacy of love and dedication. He was the beloved husband of Joanne and a loving father to Cathy Gerrato (Carl), Richard IV, and Joseph (Michele). Richard was an adored grandpa to five grandchildren: Brian Gerrato (Taralena), Jennifer Laffey (Anthony), Kathleen Gerrato, Erin Segovia (Boris), and Robert Gerrato. Great grandpa to seven cherished great-grandchildren: Giovanni, Anthony, Marco, Lena, Vincent, Nicolette, and Mia. Richard was a dear brother to Barbara Pupa and Uncle to Scott Pupa(Diane) and Lori Mauro (Michael).
Richard served in the Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Department for over 63 years, where he held the esteemed position of Honorary Chief of the Valley Stream Fire Department. His deep commitment to his Country included his military service in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer, where he received the Good Conduct Medal. Richard also served as the Past Commander of Valley Stream American Legion Post 854.
Visitation will be held at Edward F. Lieber Funeral Homes, located at 266 No. Central Ave., Valley Stream, on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral procession will take place on Friday at 10:00 AM at Calverton National Cemetery. Richard's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to NYLEAP (New York Law Enforcement Assistance Program) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. NYLEAP services are offered at no charge to individuals who serve as first responders and their families (i.e., law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, correction officers, dispatchers and members of the military).
