Paul J. Mitchell

1943 ~ 2022 (age 78)

Paul J. Mitchell, 78, of Valley Stream, passed away April 14, 2022 at his home after a five and a half year battle with cancer.  Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Paul managed his illness with dignity, strength and grace and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. During the last few days, Paul was surrounded by his best friend and loving wife, Donna of 36 years, his 4 sons, daughter-in-laws, his 4 grandsons, his sister and brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.  Paul loved and adored his family more than anything else in the world.

Paul was born July 7, 1943 in Jamaica, NY and has lived in Valley Stream most of his life.  He is the son to the late James and Bertha Mitchell (Moriates).  He graduated from Valley Stream Central High School in 1961 and Pace University in 1963.

Paul has been a regular fixture in the Valley Stream community for over 70 years.  He was an owner of Mitchell’s on Rockaway Avenue that was originally established in 1938 by his late father.  Whether he was at the counter greeting customers as they walked in or coming out of the kitchen to talk and joke with patrons, Paul was recognized everywhere he went.

After selling Mitchell’s in 1995, Paul became a mortgage broker and joined his wife Donna at Mitchell Funding of Valley Stream, where he continued to serve the Valley Stream community and helping hundreds of people live their dream and buy homes.

Paul loved his family most, spending Sundays regularly with them.  Whether it was the annual Christmas Eve dinner, the many parties or just inviting you over for a swim in the pool, Paul enjoyed having family and friends over and he and Donna were always generous and entertaining hosts.  He loved to go to parties and events where he was often the center of attention with a funny story or joke that you didn’t want to miss.  He always made you feel loved, comfortable, welcomed and at home.

Paul was also an avid Mets and NY Giants fan.  He enjoyed talking sports and how the games have changed from when he was a child.  He enjoyed watching his grandsons baseball games and the fun, friendly banter back and forth between his beloved Mets and their cross town rival Yankees.

Paul is survived by his wife Donna, sons James Mitchell (Julie), John Mitchell (Katherine), Christopher Mitchell (Britney), Paul Mitchell (Athena), grandsons Zachary Mitchell (17), Tyler Mitchell (16), Billy Mitchell (11) and Johnny Mitchell (9), sister Elaine Lambrinos (George), and nieces and nephews Anita Lambrinos, James Lambrinos, Pamela Trimboli (Steven), Joanne Basile (Keith) and many great-nieces and nephews.
