Michael “Uvel” Murdock, as he was affectionately known, was born on February 16,
1963, in St. Mary, Oracabessa, Jamaica, West Indies, to Pearl and Clive Murdock. He
was the youngest of seven children.
Michael began his early education in Jamaica and often reflected fondly on those
memories. In 1969, he immigrated to the United States with his father and sister, Loris.
They spent the next two years living with their aunt, Carmelia Coates, and her family in
Washington, D.C. Michael formed new friendships, enjoyed family outings, and
frequently traveled to New York to visit his parents.
In 1971, Michael and Loris joined their parents in New York City. Soon after, they were
reunited with three of their siblings—Lennox, Marva, and Oster. These were exciting
years living in a high-rise apartment building in Manhattan. Michael and Loris were
active in after school church programs and he joined the youth ministry, where he
accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. He also became involved with the Boys Club,
developed a love for sports and learned how to swim.
In 1974, the family relocated to Richmond Hill, Queens, New York. After graduating from
P.S. 223 middle school, he attended Springfield Gardens High School, where he earned
his high school diploma. Michael continued his passion for sports, especially basketball,
and spending hours at the neighborhood park playing with his peers.
Michael began working at Bellevue Hospital where his mother was employed as a
registered nurse. He worked in the dietary department for many years and was known
for his strong work ethic, kindness, and respectful spirit. He was loved by all who knew
him.
On November 28, 1992, Michael and Myra welcomed their beloved son, Michael
Murdock Jr., into the world.
In 1995, “Uvel” moved to Jamaica Estates, Queens, where he resided until his death.
In May 2011, Michael began working at Westview in the maintenance department.
There, he became well respected by both his coworkers and the residents of the
building for his dedication, kind heart, and always pleasant demeanor.
In 2012 he married Michelle Sebastian.
Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Murdock, and his brother, Oster
Bryan. He leaves behind his loving father, Clive Murdock (Solange); his beloved son,
Michael Murdock Jr.; and his siblings: Dawn Rose, Verna Bryan, Lennox Bryan
(Deborah), Marva Bryan, and Loris Johnson (Leonard), along with a host of aunts,
uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, friends, neighbors, and
colleagues who will deeply miss him.
Michael “Uvel” Murdock will be remembered for his warm spirit, dedication to family, and
the kindness he showed to everyone he encountered. A devoted fan of the New York
Knicks, Uvel could spend hours passionately discussing anything related to his favorite
team. He was also an avid lover of music, you could often find him with headphones on,
enjoying a wide variety of music. His gentle nature, joyful presence, and genuine love
for people will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him
