December 24, 1936 ~ January 7, 2024 (age 87) 87 Years Old
Margaret McGovern née Higgins, age 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at Bethesda East Hospital in Boynton Beach, FL.
Mrs. McGovern (Margie) was born in Bronx, NY, the daughter of the late Joseph Higgins and Rosella Higgins Keeley. She graduated as valedictorian of St. Simon Stock High School and went on to work as an executive secretary at Equitable Life Insurance Company. She married in 1958, moved to Valley Stream, NY in 1963 and retired to Boynton Beach, FL in 1997.
Mrs. McGovern is survived by her beloved children, James McGovern and his wife, Gina, of Merrick, NY; John McGovern of New York, NY; Jean McGovern Klem and her husband Joseph Klem of Arlington, VA; Gerard McGovern of Boynton Beach, FL; Janice McGovern of Medford, NY; and Joseph McGovern of Bay Shore, NY; six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren include: Terence, Allison, Stephen, Timothy, Dillon and Brianna. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McGovern was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Patrick McGovern.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Margie will be remembered for her love of dogs, gardening, watching parades, baking date nut bread, coffee ice cream and nightly playing Jeopardy along with Wheel of Fortune. She also enjoyed singing along with the car radio while driving in the family station wagon.
She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Valley Stream, and St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Boynton Beach. She will be missed by her family and friends in the communities where she lived and thrived for many years.
Friend are invited to visit January 11,2024 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Lieber Funeral Home, 266 No. Central Avenue Valley Stream, N.Y. 11580. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at January 12,2024 in Blessed Sacrament Church Valley Stream. Internment will be at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
