James Carberry, better known to his family and friends as Jimmy, was born on January 18, 1962 the youngest of five children of the late George and Patricia Carberry. His older siblings are Patrick, George, Peggy and Tommy. He was a native of Astoria, NY.
Jimmy attended St. John’s University to study to be a pharmacist. Instead, he decided to change course and follow in the footsteps of his late grandfather, Patrick J. Shelley. He became a proud member of IBEW Local 3. He retired in 2020 after 31 years of working at various job sites as a Local 3 electrician throughout New York City.
During this time, he met Ivone Rocha; they married on January 13, 2003. They began their new life together in Astoria, and later moved to Valley Stream, Long Island. Jimmy and Ivone had 22 wonderful and happy years together. His family grew in 2004 when the kids arrived from Brazil, Jimmy, at that time, was in the hospital and he often joked about giving birth to his kids Jhessyka and Gabriel. This was a way of saying that they were truly his children. He was incredibly proud of the adults that they became, beaming with pride at Gabriel’s accomplishment of becoming a dentist.
He became a father-in-law when Jhessyka married Victor Armas. Later, he became a doting and happy grandfather to Isabella Armas, 12 and Luke James Armas, 4. One of his greatest joys in life was picking up his granddaughter from school and playing with his grandchildren.
Jimmy’s favorite holiday was Christmas, which was fitting for a man whose goal was always to make those around him happy. He paid attention to the little things that made people feel special.
Jimmy was known for his carefree personality. He also had a great love for Candy Crush and Sudoku. He knew all the tricks and was always willing to help people when they hit the “extremely difficult” level. He was a stickler for details and stayed on a project until everything was working.
Besides his immediate family, he also has an extended family which consists of many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
