George Herron was born August 24,1934 in Astoria, Queens, to James and Catherine (nee Gallagher) Herron. He was the second son in a family of four boys. He grew up in a loving family, with his brothers Jimmy, Pete, and Mike. The family moved to the Baisley Park neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens where he went to Saint Clement’s elementary school. He went on to study and graduate from Woodrow Wilson Vocational High School.
After High School, he proudly served in the US Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Leyte. After being honorably discharged, he served in the naval reserves. He used the technical knowledge he learned in high school and the navy, and post navy college courses to forge a successful career as an electrical engineer with Redactron Corporation, Borroughs Corporation, and Reuters Group.
In 1958, he married the love of his life, Agnes Joanna Mowen, a marriage that lasted 65 years and was the foundation of his life. Together they had three children, Mary Ann, Daniel, and John. He devoted his life to faith and family. He was an active Holy Name of Mary parishioner and served in the Knights of Columbus, including as Grand Knight and leader of the Squires. He also served as a Eucharistic Minister, visiting the sick and homebound. After retirement, he was active in the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, delivering meals throughout the local community. He also served as sacristan and often did the readings at daily mass.
He was a devoted son, brother, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend. He fixed whatever was broken, gave rides to the airport and hospital visits, opened his home to friends, family, and neighbors, and provided solace and prayers to those in need.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Jo; his children and their spouses, Mary Ann (James), Dan (Jane), and John (Stacey); his cherished grandchildren, Alex (Jesse), Aydan, Colin, Liam (Amanda), Frank, Mary, Siobhan, Eion, Finn, Kaleigh, and Brianna and great-grandson Seely. He was predeceased by his loved grandson, Kevin.
His legacy is the love he shared with all who knew him.
