Florence Marion Gunther (née Wuerfel), a lifelong resident of Valley
Stream, New York, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at the age
of 100.
Born on December 2, 1925, in Valley Stream, Florence was the beloved
daughter of John and Amelia Wuerfel (née Jacobs) and the oldest of
fourteen children. From a young age, she played an important role in
helping to raise and care for her siblings, a reflection of the deep sense
of responsibility and love that would define her life.
Florence graduated from Valley Stream Central High School in 1944. On
May 21, 1949, she married the love of her life, Joseph Charles Gunther,
with whom she shared 66 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they
built a life centered on family, faith, friendship, music, and travel. In
1954, Joseph completed construction of their cherished family home on
Benedict Avenue, where Florence created a warm and welcoming space
for all who entered.
Florence and Joseph were blessed with two daughters, Diane and Linda,
who were the pride and joy of her life.
Deeply devoted to her community, Florence dedicated many years to
volunteering and service in Valley Stream. She served as President of the
Rosary Society at Blessed Sacrament Church and as Treasurer of the
Valley Stream Historical Society. Over the years, she was also actively
involved with the Girl Scouts, the Valley Stream Central High School
Alumni Association, and the Catholic Youth Organization, where she
especially enjoyed bowling.
Florence had a true love for travel and adventure. She visited all 50
states and cherished the many trips she shared with Joseph, especially
their beloved visits to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Her final trip there in
September 2025 remained a special and treasured memory.
She will be remembered for her remarkable memory and attention to
detail. Florence had a deep appreciation for family history and
genealogy and never forgot a birthday. Her sharp mind, warmth, and
unwavering love for her family made her truly one of a kind.
Florence is survived by her loving daughters, Diane (Phil Wood) and
Linda; her five cherished grandchildren, Casey (Michele), Shawn
(LoriAnne), Michael (Vera), Carrie, and Becky; and her eleven beloved
great-grandchildren, Doniella, Riley, Angelo, Patrick, Anthony, Vida,
Adam, Noah, Lucas, Zoja, and Jacob.
Florence’s life was a beautiful testament to love, devotion, and
community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
