Clemente Matias, Jr. was born on January 15, 1940 in Rincon, P,R, and passed away at the age of 81 on June 1, 2021.
Clem, as he liked to be called, came to New York City with his parents, Clemente Matias Sr. and Maria Baez and 8 brothers and sisters when he was in the 2nd grade. They all lived on 14th street in Manhattan until they moved to Queens.
Clem went into the army in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1965. He proudly served his country while stationed in Alaska during the Vietnam era. The Army would have been his career but he chose to come home because he didn't want his Mom to suffer anymore.
His love for his Mother and family outweighed everything in life until he met the love of his life Monserrate Torres. They met while he worked as a refrigeration/AC foreman and Monsy (as he nicknamed her) worked in housekeeping at New York University Hospital on 34th Street in Manhattan.
Those who knew Clem knew he was a jokester, a ball buster, a great dancer, a straight shooter, a spiritual person, read the Post from beginning to end every day, was called the Mayor of our neighborhood, loved music, a die hard Mets fan, loved to cook, loved to wear a suit whenever he travelled, called all of his nieces his "favorite girl", all his nephews were candy asses and he loved his family no matter what.
Survivors include his wife Monserrate Matias, his 2 daughters, Deanna Spearin and Frances Fohnsbee, his grand-daughter Casey McAvoy, and his 2 great-granddaughters McKenna and Everly McAvoy, his sisters Sari Fassano & Titi Matias, his brothers James and Stanley Matias, his 7 God children, a multitude of nieces and nephews and many friends who became family. Predeceased by his parents Clemente Matias Sr. and Maria Baez.
