It is with profound sadness that the family of Anthony “Tony”
Celona announces his passing on May 3 at the age of 94. Tony
was a first generation American of Sicilian heritage, who was
raised in the South Bronx. He attended Aviation High School,
where he was a catcher on the baseball team. After graduation,
Tony began working in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking
Corporation (HSBC) mail room. Over a 40 year career, he worked
his way up to Vice President of the bank. This is where Tony met
the love of his life, Judith Weill. They married in 1955 and went
on to create a big, beautiful family: 6 children; 13 grandchildren
and 7 great-grandchildren! Tony’s hobbies included painting,
working on cars, gardening, and working around the house. Tony
was a die-hard Yankee fan who, as a teenager, used to sit on the
steps in Yankee Stadium to watch his favorite team. Tony was an
optimist who loved to share stories from his past. He was kind
and friendly to everyone he knew. Tony was a devoted husband,
an amazing father, a loving grandfather and a cherished friend. To
know Tony Celona was to love him. He will be missed terribly.
